Meta Ray-Ban Display vs. €459: what you actually get for the money

1 min read
Meta's Ray-Ban Display launched at €459 and got every tech reviewer
talking. I've spent a month with one. Here's how it stacks up against
what €281 buys you in our flagship, the SmartSenses Horizon — and
which one is actually right for you.

THE OBVIOUS WIN FOR META

The brand. You walk out wearing Ray-Bans, not "smart glasses." That
matters. People notice the frame style first, the tech second (if at
all). Meta partnered with the right eyewear brand at the right moment,
and that's almost impossible to compete with on day one.

The Meta AI photo pipeline is also genuinely excellent. 12 MP combined
with computational photography means your photos look phone-quality,
not body-cam-quality. If you're posting to Instagram daily, that
matters.

WHERE €459 STARTS TO LOOK LIKE A LOT

Storage. Meta gives you 32 GB. Horizon ships with 64 GB. If you
record 4K video for any length, you'll feel the difference within a
week.

Battery. Meta's claimed 4 hours is closer to 2-3 hours under real
use with AI features active. Horizon delivers 20+ hours of music
playback and 100+ hours of standby. For DACH commuters, that's the
difference between "charge nightly" and "charge weekly."

AI translation. Meta's translation is strong for English-Spanish,
English-French, English-Portuguese. It's noticeably weaker outside
the major Romance pairs. Horizon supports 100+ languages including
all the ones DACH business travelers actually need: Polish, Czech,
Hungarian, Russian, Turkish, Arabic.

Independence from Meta. Wearing Meta Ray-Ban means you're paying
€459 to become a more deeply integrated Meta customer. The Meta
View app requires a Facebook or Instagram account, and your usage
data trains their AI models. Horizon talks to its own app, or
directly to OpenAI's API of your choice. Your usage doesn't train
anyone's model unless you explicitly opt in.

WHO SHOULD BUY THE META

You take photos of your social life and post them. You live in a
Romance-language country and translate occasionally. You actively
want to be inside Meta's ecosystem. The €459 feels acceptable.

WHO SHOULD BUY THE HORIZON

You translate in multiple languages weekly. You record longer
content (45 minutes of 4K video, vs. Meta's ~15 before storage and
battery limits hit). You don't want a Facebook account history
attached to your glasses. The €281 buys you flagship specs without
the brand premium — and it ships in 8-12 days from Shenzhen for
free, same as Meta's regular delivery.

THE HONEST CONCLUSION

If style is the deciding factor, the Ray-Ban brand wins. We're not
pretending otherwise. If you've read this far, you're more spec-
driven than brand-driven, and the Horizon is better value for
nearly every use case I tested over the month.

We won't try to convince you otherwise — the comparison table on
our site shows you all 56 models we track, including the Meta. Use
it to decide for yourself.
